Once you have the proper bird house plans in hand, there are a few other things you should consider when building your own birdhouse:

1. Will your birdhouse be tree hung or ground mounted? You need to think about the safety of the birds that will be taking up residence in your backyard. Tree hung birdhouses might be more preferable to birds to keep them away from most predators.

2. Depending on the size of hole you construct, if it is too big or too small you might not be able to accommodate the birds that you designed it for. It might also make it easily accessible for squirrels so double check your measurements.

3. Position of the birdhouse? You should investigate the weather patterns for your city so that you are aware of the wind and rain direction that might impact your bird house.

4. When decorating your bird house, use light colors that do not attract alot of heat, so that the nest does not get to warm.

A good set of bird house plans will help you build the right size bird house with the proper dimensions and cut sizes in place. There are some important tips that I would like to share with you that will help you keep your bird visitors safe.

  • Make sure you drill holes in the bottom of the bird house for drainage and small holes at the sides for ventilation.
  • Do not build a perch on your birdhouse.  A perch will only draw the attention of predators putting the birds in danger.

Make sure you use the right materials-Pressure treated wood is very toxic to birds. Avoid recycled wood that might have been treated with lead paint or that might have been treated with creosote.
  • Create a birdhouse that can be easily accessible for cleaning.
  • Create an overhang at the front of the birdhouse which is at least 2 inches away from the opening. This will protect the entry from wind and rain as well as predator access.
  • Avoid using materials that can overheat the nests such as metal.
