Start Building Your Own Shed Now!

Before you start hammering you need to keep a few things in mind. When my friend built his shed a few years ago he did not have a proper plan in place before constructing. Important information such as having a set of plans, a material list, or even an idea of what would be the final result were not considered. This of course was not a very intelligent way to build a shed and it cost him alot of time, labour and money trying to do things by trial and error trying to design on a whim.

When you start to build your own shed, the first thing that should have been reviewed is the local building code to find out the regulations and requirements. It is also important to to check if you are part of any type of a home owner’s association and seek their approval as well. Before you can take these steps you need to be prepared with a set of plans.  You will save yourself alot of time and money if you purchase a good set of plans from the very start. This would be better than starting from scratch so that you ensure all requirements are met.
Your blueprints should have a complete material list as well as a cut chart showing you the dimensions of your wood sizes. This is very helpful so that you can buy or cut your material to the desired lengths ahead of time. This will save alot of time and effort putting the pieces together throughout the project. You would not be able to achieve this task if you did not have a professional set of construction plans.

Part of your pre-planning would involve:

  • Finding the right location for your shed and what purpose it would be used for. For instance you might want to build a shed that will utilize a power source. You will need to make sure you have a path to draw your power from.
  • What exterior finishes will be applied so that the design blends in with your house and the surrounding properties.
  • What is your budget allotment for this project? Have you taken into consideration the cost of the blueprints, the materials, permits, electrical costs, additional labour?

Taking all these factors into consideration will help your project run alot smoother and save you time and money when you build your own shed.  For great information on how to build your own shed check out this Shed Building Site.
